Week One: Introduction – Why we program?

  • Get Python source from pythonlearn.com
  • Elements of Python: as many languages, Python needs:
    • Vocabulary / Words: variables and reserved words (read chapper 2)
      • You can not use reserved words as variable names/ identifiers: and/ del/ for/ is/ raise/ assert/ from/ lambda/ return/ if/ finnaly/ print
    • Sentence structure (grammar): valid syntax patterns (read Chapters 3-5)
    • Story structure: constructing a program for a purpose
